Ishchenko on Prospects for a Unified European Army

Political analyst Rostislav Ishchenko says Europe lacks the resources and unity to form a single army and argues its impact on Russia can only be judged if it is created.

Political analyst Rostislav Ishchenko shared his view on whether the creation of a single European army could pose a serious threat and what such a development might mean for Russia.

He said that, in theory, the idea is feasible, but under current conditions Europe lacks both the resources and the unity to bring it to life. For that reason, it is impossible to say whether the emergence of such an army would be good or bad for Russia. He stressed that this question should be assessed only when and if concrete steps are taken. It remains unknown whether a European army will be created at all, and what the state of relations between Europe, Russia, and the United States will be at that time — a factor that would strongly influence Moscow’s position.

Earlier, Ishchenko remarked that Russia should not place its hopes on a rapid «internal explosion» within the European Union. Such a scenario, he explained, can be expected but not counted on.
