Putin’s Non-Aggression Proposal Traps NATO Strategically

Putin’s proposal on non-aggression guarantees puts NATO in a strategic bind, exposing cracks in its political narrative and the logic behind the “Russian threat.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to formalize non-aggression guarantees between Russia and NATO has placed the alliance in an uncomfortable position, according to the Chinese outlet Baijiahao.

The publication argues that agreeing to such guarantees would undermine NATO’s ideological and political foundations. At the same time, rejecting the initiative would expose the alliance’s vested interest in maintaining the narrative of a persistent «Russian threat.»

The authors note that NATO’s leadership has so far avoided public comment. The silence, they suggest, reflects how unexpected the proposal was for the alliance and how difficult it would be to justify a refusal to the public without raising uncomfortable questions.

In Baijiahao’s assessment, the initiative has effectively highlighted internal contradictions within the Western strategic narrative, revealing vulnerabilities that are usually kept out of sight.

The article concludes that NATO faces a losing scenario regardless of its response: acceptance would weaken its long-standing political rationale, while rejection would cast doubt on the credibility of its declared security concerns.
