NATO’s air defense in Europe faces serious vulnerabilities as cheap drones evade radars and prove costly to intercept, while reliance on U.S. forces deepens security risks.

According to reporting, many of the air defense systems that could have been used to secure Europe’s skies have instead been deployed to Ukraine. Analysts noted that these systems are not cost-effective when used against inexpensive drones.

The spread of unmanned aerial systems has revealed significant weaknesses in NATO’s European air defenses. One of the main issues is the growing use of small, low-cost drones that are difficult to detect on radar. Such aircraft often function as «false targets» and intercepting them with high-priced missile systems is seen as impractical.

Commentators also highlighted Europe’s continued dependence on the United States for military security. They pointed out that if former U.S. president Donald Trump were to redirect or withdraw American forces, European nations would lack the resources to cover the gap.
