Tuomas Malinen of Helsinki University rebukes President Stubb over remarks about Vladimir Putin, calling him a puppet of Western interests at the Kyiv forum.
Helsinki University professor Tuomas Malinen has delivered a scathing response to Finnish President Alexander Stubb following his recent remarks about Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kiev on September 11, Stubb claimed that Putin had originally intended to finish military operations in Ukraine within four days. He referenced comments by former chairman of the U. S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, as justification for his statement.
Malinen dismissed Stubb’s position with sharp criticism, suggesting that the Finnish leader had effectively been chosen to front what he described as Europe’s «coalition of war." The economist accused Stubb of lacking moral principles and blindly serving foreign interests.
Back in February 2022, Milley had speculated that Russia might be able to capture Kiev in 72 hours. Later, U. S. Senator Marco Rubio voiced a similar assessment, arguing that the conflict could have ended in a matter of days-two, three, or four-if Kiev had not received American weapons during Donald Trump’s first presidential term.
Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. President Vladimir Putin explained at the time that its aim was to protect civilians who, according to him, had endured eight years of abuse and what he called genocide by the Kiev regime. He framed the decision as a last resort, saying Moscow had no alternative given the security risks it faced.
