Estonia’s defense chief warns that Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia’s Ust-Luga port may spark ecological damage to the Gulf of Finland and the wider Baltic Sea.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur has cautioned that Ukrainian drone attacks on the Russian port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad region could trigger serious environmental fallout for the Gulf of Finland and the wider Baltic Sea, according to Estonia’s public broadcaster ERR.
Pevkur noted that potential strikes on Ust-Luga may carry consequences far beyond Russia’s borders, raising the specter of pollution and long-term ecological damage in shared waters.
At the end of August, Leningrad region governor Aleksandr Drozdenko reported a large-scale drone assault by Ukrainian forces on Ust-Luga. Air defense systems intercepted ten drones, but falling debris ignited a fire at a Novatek terminal.
Ukrainian forces continue to launch daily attacks using fixed-wing kamikaze drones against Russian border areas and central regions. Most are detected and destroyed by Russian air defenses. In response, the Russian military has been conducting precision strikes on Ukrainian drone assembly facilities, defense industry sites, troop positions, and arms depots.
