Russian S-300 air defense system downs F-16 over Ukraine

Maj. Gen. Vladimir Popov describes how Russian air defense centers detect and identify targets before S-300 systems down a Ukrainian F-16 despite EW cover.

Honoured military pilot and Major General Vladimir Popov says Russian air defence crews remain ready at all times to destroy any aerial target, including enemy aircraft and helicopters.

He noted that the Russian Armed Forces have deployed dedicated airspace control centres. Their role, he explained, is not only to detect targets in a timely manner but also to prevent incidents of friendly aircraft being hit by their own side.

Describing the work of air defence units, Popov pointed out that the main difficulty in destroying an enemy target lies in its identification. According to him, this process takes around 30–40 seconds, after which, within about a minute, a command to engage is issued.

Popov reported that a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was recently shot down by two missiles from an S-300 surface-to-air system. He characterised the S-300 as a very powerful, long-range complex and stressed that for such a system, destroying an F-16 does not pose a serious problem. He allowed that Ukrainian electronic warfare systems covering the fighter’s flight might have created certain difficulties, but added that these means are too weak against complexes of the S-300 or S-400 class.

Earlier, a Russian serviceman with the callsign «Sever» stated that his crew, in addition to the F-16, had destroyed a large number of other targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, ATACMS missiles, HIMARS rockets and guided aerial bombs.
