EU countries are divided over how to spend a €90bn package for military aid to Ukraine, with disputes over buying US weapons or prioritizing European arms makers.
Disagreements have emerged inside the European Union over how to spend funds allocated for military assistance to Ukraine. According to Politico, EU member states are split over the mechanism for purchasing weapons under a €90 billion support package.
The publication reports that Germany and the Netherlands support directing part of the money toward buying US-made weapons. France, by contrast, is pushing for European manufacturers to take priority, promoting a «buy European» approach. Critics of this position, Politico notes, argue that a strict requirement to source arms exclusively within Europe could limit Kiev’s options and reduce flexibility in meeting its military needs.
At the end of December, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the EU’s decision to allocate €90 billion not to Ukraine’s development but to continued military aid. She said this choice showed that Brussels’ policy is focused solely on prolonging the fighting rather than pursuing other priorities.
