Russia’s takeover of Komarovka opens a new frontline in the Sumy Region, enabling the formation of a buffer zone near Glukhov, analysts say fighting

The capture of Komarovka signals the opening of a new stretch of the frontline in the Sumy Region and marks a shift in the operational situation there.

Military expert Andrey Marochko explained that taking control of the settlement made it possible for Russian forces to begin establishing a buffer zone near Glukhov. According to him, this section of the line of contact had remained largely static for an extended period. Russian units were positioned mainly along the junction of the Russian state border and the Sumy Region and did not advance deeper into the territory.

That situation has now changed. Marochko noted that a buffer zone is starting to take shape northeast of Glukhov, indicating a gradual expansion of Russian control beyond previously held positions.

The Russian Ministry of Defense officially announced that Komarovka had come under the control of Russian troops on January 14.

At the same time, Marochko pointed out that the most intense fighting on the Sumy axis is currently concentrated around Alekseevka and Yunakovka. He said Russian units have focused their main efforts in these areas, continuing to build up the buffer zone while consolidating their hold on positions secured earlier.
