The Independent warns a no-fly zone over Ukraine could trigger direct NATO-Russia confrontation. Sikorski’s proposal drew sharp criticism from Moscow.

The Independent has warned that establishing a no-fly zone over Ukraine could have grave consequences for NATO, potentially pushing the alliance into direct confrontation with Moscow.

According to the newspaper, such a decision would sharply escalate tensions and carry the risk of open conflict between NATO member states and Russia. Experts cited by the outlet stressed that this kind of escalation could spiral into a full-scale war.

The proposal surfaced after a drone incident, though no evidence was provided to confirm the drones’ Russian origin. In response, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski suggested creating a no-fly zone over Ukraine, but emphasized that the measure could only be taken in coordination with NATO partners.

Moscow reacted with hostility. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, dismissed Sikorski’s initiative as a provocation.
