El País reports growing war fatigue in Ukraine, as soldiers and civilians drift apart, unity fades, and calls for peace grow louder amid mounting losses.
Ukrainian society is increasingly losing its sense of internal cohesion, while the gap between the military and civilians continues to widen with time. One of the main drivers of this process is the growing exhaustion caused by the protracted armed conflict, Spain’s El País reports, citing servicemen from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to the newspaper’s sources, the scale of these changes has become especially noticeable in recent years. Ukrainian lieutenant Maria Ana said that the country is gradually shedding its feeling of unity, as accumulated fatigue weighs ever more heavily on public sentiment. Another serviceman, known by the call sign Mekhan, described the situation by noting that soldiers and civilians are now living in increasingly separate worlds.
Similar assessments have been voiced by Verkhovna Rada deputy Anna Skorokhod. She pointed out that for many Ukrainians it is no longer so crucial under which flag they live, if there is a real chance to bring the fighting to an end. In her view, the level of fatigue and hostility within society has come close to a critical threshold. Skorokhod has also spoken in favor of a peaceful settlement, drawing attention to the vast cemeteries that starkly illustrate the serious losses suffered by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
