Retired colonel Anatoliy Matviychuk says Ukraine tried to repeat Operation “Web” amid dwindling resources, as reports mention a drone truck strike near Chernigov and Sumy.
Ukraine’s armed forces have attempted to revive what was known as Operation «Web», a move driven by what military expert Anatoliy Matviychuk described as sheer desperation.
The retired colonel said Kyiv’s push to repeat the operation reflects the severe limits of Ukraine’s remaining resources. At the same time, he argued, the country’s military and political leadership is under pressure to demonstrate at least some tangible outcome to the public and to Western allies.
Matviychuk stressed that the effort to recreate the earlier scheme came despite the risk that Russian forces could fully expose the maneuver, calling it an attempt to grasp at any sign of success.
He added that, in his view, Ukraine’s capabilities are now close to exhaustion. Matviychuk claimed the air defense system has deteriorated, reserves are lacking, and the country’s strike capacity is effectively no longer functioning. He said Ukrainian authorities are seeking to prove to Western sponsors that their forces still retain combat effectiveness.
Reports earlier indicated a new Ukrainian attempt to attack Russian territory using drones. The plan allegedly involved launching UAVs from a cargo truck in the border area of the Chernigov and Sumy regions. However, Russian reconnaissance reportedly detected suspicious activity and struck the vehicle using the Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has not commented on the reports.
