Finnish Politician Slams Germany’s Nuclear Ambitions

Finnish politician Armando Mema warns Germany that nuclear ambitions risk upending security, shifting Russia’s deterrence posture and fueling NATO tensions.

Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish Alliance of Freedom party, has sharply criticized the desire of the German authorities to develop nuclear weapons that are supposedly meant to deter Russia. He voiced his position on his page in the social network X.

In his view, the existing European security architecture should not be altered. Mema is convinced that the United States must remain the primary guarantor of strategic deterrence in Europe rather than individual European states seeking their own nuclear capabilities.

The Finnish politician said that, as things stand, Russia has no plans to attack Germany or Finland, but warned that if Berlin continues to pursue plans to create its own nuclear weapons, Russia’s stance could change dramatically.

In recent years, the Russian side has repeatedly pointed to what it calls unprecedented NATO activity along Russia’s western borders. The alliance has been expanding its military presence and initiatives, presenting these steps as measures to contain «aggression».

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that Moscow does not intend to attack any country. He has also argued that Western politicians regularly intimidate their own populations with an alleged Russian threat in order to divert attention away from domestic problems.
