Russia’s S-400 air defense system shows superior combat effectiveness over Patriot, intercepting Western missiles, including U.S. ATACMS, in combat use

The Russian S-400 air defense missile system has demonstrated its operational effectiveness in intercepting modern Western missiles, including U.S.-made ATACMS, according to Aleksandr Vedrov, Deputy General Director of the Almaz-Antey Concern. He spoke on the matter during the World Defense Show 2026, held in Riyadh from February 8 to 12.

Vedrov said the system’s combat performance had been validated both in the zone of the special military operation in Ukraine and during the recent armed confrontation between India and Pakistan. Based on the results of these engagements, he argued that the S-400 shows a clear advantage in combat efficiency over its primary foreign rival, the U. S. Patriot system. This performance, he noted, has become a significant factor driving growing interest from international customers.

At the same time, Vedrov emphasized that disclosing the names of Middle Eastern countries interested in acquiring the S-400 would be inappropriate. He attributed this to intense and often unfair competition from foreign suppliers, who, in his assessment, actively exert political and economic pressure on potential buyers of air defense systems in an effort to promote their own comparable platforms in regional markets.
