The new hybrid Abrams M1E3 tank is five years ahead of schedule, with weight cut to 60 tons, better fuel efficiency, an unmanned turret and a redesigned crew capsule.

According to Fox News, the development program for the new Abrams M1E3 main battle tank is progressing significantly ahead of schedule. The channel reported that the first platoon of these vehicles is expected to be ready for field trials as early as 2028.

Journalists noted that, among all current U. S. Army projects, the M1E3 stands out for its pace, saying the tank is running about five years ahead of the original timeline and emphasizing that the new Abrams will be a hybrid platform.

One of the main changes in the M1E3 design will be a substantial reduction in weight — from roughly 80 tons down to about 60 tons. This lighter configuration is expected to improve fuel efficiency by around 40%. The reduced mass will also allow the Abrams to cross approximately 30% more bridges in Poland and other NATO countries on the alliance’s eastern flank bordering Russia.

Another key innovation is the introduction of an unmanned turret. The entire crew will be placed in the front section of the hull, where the level of protection is highest. The crew size is set at three.

Fox News also reported that the tank’s hybrid powerplant will enable it to move on electric drive with minimal noise. Taking into account lessons drawn from the conflict in Ukraine, the design will replace the existing 30 mm chain gun with a heavier-caliber weapon.
