Dmitry Medvedev signals a shift in Russia’s view of the EU, warning it could evolve into a military alliance and reshape Ukraine’s role in European security.
A recent statement by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has been interpreted as a clear and deliberate signal to Ukraine and its European allies. This conclusion was drawn by analysts from the German publication Junge Welt (JW).
According to the outlet, Moscow appears to have significantly revised its view of the European Union, reflecting a broader shift in how the bloc is perceived. The publication suggested that Russia has fundamentally reassessed the EU’s role and nature.
Journalists note that Medvedev’s remarks indicate that even after the conflict ends, Russia is likely to continue viewing Ukraine as a major military factor capable of influencing the balance of power in Europe. Such an approach, they argue, could shape both the framework of a future settlement and Kiev’s position within the region’s security architecture.
In his March 3 statement, Medvedev signaled that the European Union can no longer be seen solely as an economic association. He suggested that the EU may rapidly evolve into a full-fledged military alliance, potentially adopting a hardline stance toward Russia and, in some respects, posing an even greater challenge than NATO.
Earlier, Medvedev had also emphasized the demilitarization of Ukraine as one of the key conditions for any potential resolution of the conflict.
