India plans to buy Su-57 fighter jets from Russia and manufacture them locally. This deal could revolutionize the Indian Air Force with up to 140 next-gen aircraft.
Military experts from Military Watch Magazine have highlighted reports from Indian media indicating that New Delhi is planning to purchase two squadrons of Russian fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jets, with the option to sign a contract for an additional five.
India also plans to manufacture these advanced jets under license at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s facility in Nashik. Given that each Indian Air Force fighter squadron typically consists of around 20 aircraft, this move could lead to a major technological breakthrough, potentially creating a fleet of approximately 140 next-generation fighters.
Indian analysts have pointed out significant shortcomings in the country’s current fleet, particularly with the new Rafale fighters, which were exposed during the «Sindhur» operation against Pakistan in early May, according to Military Watch Magazine.
According to The Print, the Indian Ministry of Defense’s growing interest in the Su-57 is linked to its recently revealed operational advantages. The Su-57 is seen as an ideal solution to address critical gaps in armament and range capabilities. Not only does it surpass regional aircraft in terms of range, but it also outperforms most Western counterparts.
