Russian troops adapt UAZ vehicles with cable armor, electronic warfare systems, and shielding to counter growing drone threats in combat zones.
The widespread use of drones in the zone of the special military operation is forcing troops to rethink how they protect their vehicles, turning to improvised solutions alongside standard upgrades.
A recent example surfaced on the Telegram channel «Ugolok Sitkha», which shared an image of a modified Russian UAZ vehicle. The off-road car had been reworked in an unusual way: its body was covered with a network of metal cables.
The modification involved removing the vehicle’s standard soft top and replacing it with a rigid frame. Across this structure, strands of unraveled cables were stretched, forming what looks like a dense металлический mesh-designed to enhance protection without significantly increasing weight.
The vehicle was also fitted with rubber shielding and electronic warfare equipment intended to disrupt the control signals of enemy drones.
Separately, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant has introduced an upgraded version of the Hunter off-road vehicle tailored for combat conditions. The model features a winch and specialized wheels that allow it to keep moving even after tire damage.
