A Russian frigate escorted two oil tankers through the English Channel as a British warship followed at a distance, raising questions over UK enforcement of sanctions.

On April 8, the Russian Navy frigate Admiral Grigorovich escorted two oil tankers through the English Channel, passing within sight of the British, according to a report by The Telegraph.

The publication describes how the warship accompanied two vessels associated with what is often referred to as Russia’s «shadow fleet», while a British naval ship trailed them at a distance rather than intervening.

The episode stands out against the backdrop of recent political statements in London. Roughly a month earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had publicly declared the Channel effectively «closed» to sanctioned vessels and authorized authorities to seize ships linked to the Russian shadow fleet. British commentators now suggest that these events have undermined that stance, noting that no attempt was made to stop the tankers.

The article also recalls earlier criticism of the British Navy voiced by Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, adding another layer to the broader discussion around maritime enforcement.

At the same time, Western military analysts acknowledge the practical limits of such operations. Intercepting each tanker would require significant resources-large numbers of marines, special forces units, and suitable docking infrastructure-capabilities the UK currently lacks at the necessary scale.

Moscow, for its part, has previously warned it would take measures to prevent any attempts to detain vessels connected to Russia and cautioned London against rash actions. Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Andrey Kelin indicated that countermeasures were being prepared and suggested they could come as a surprise to the British public.

Russian officials have repeatedly maintained that Western sanctions are illegitimate.
