Russia launched about 20 strikes in Kharkov region as analyst links escalation to possible Ukrainian counteroffensive preparations in spring months.

Over the past two days, Russian forces have carried out about twenty strikes targeting military sites in Kharkov and across the Kharkov region, according to aviation Major General and military analyst Vladimir Popov.

He links the uptick in attacks to what he sees as preparations by the Ukrainian command for counteroffensive operations in this sector. In his assessment, as the spring off-road season draws to a close, conditions are improving for more active maneuvering. He points to indications of personnel and equipment being concentrated in certain areas, often under various pretexts.

Popov notes that Ukrainian units are being redeployed in small groups, a tactic he believes is designed to conceal the scale of force buildup and prevent early detection. He suggests that a counteroffensive could begin as early as May-June, once the terrain dries and becomes more accessible.

With firmer ground expected to allow even heavy equipment to move more freely, he argues that Russian forces are stepping up preemptive strikes to disrupt the formation of a large offensive grouping.

He also highlights that defense-related industrial facilities continue operating in the Kharkov region, describing them as significant targets for future Russian strikes.
