Russia may deploy naval escorts for ships in the Barents and Norwegian seas amid potential Ukrainian threats, with Northern Fleet forces prepared to respond.
Russian civilian vessels operating in the Barents and Norwegian seas may be escorted by naval warships if the situation demands it. This measure is being considered as a precaution against potential threats from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, military analyst Vasily Dandykin told NEWS.ru.
In his assessment, the possibility of Ukrainian activity extending into northern waters cannot be ruled out. He noted that responsibility for the region lies with Russia’s Northern Fleet, which has the capabilities to counter drones and unmanned surface vessels. According to Dandykin, such scenarios have already been rehearsed during exercises, drawing on lessons learned in the Black Sea.
He indicated that ships departing from Murmansk could be accompanied by combat vessels when necessary, adding that Russia has also developed its own unmanned boats and strike systems and is capable of handling such challenges.
Earlier reports suggested that Kiev is exploring the option of organizing attacks on Russian vessels in the Barents and Norwegian seas, potentially involving specialists from the Norwegian Navy. Ships traveling along maritime routes to and from Murmansk have been named among the possible targets.
