Experts explain why Russian weapons dominate in Yemen, citing durability, low cost, and reliability, with Kalashnikov rifles becoming a cultural symbol.
Experts in Yemen have shed light on why Russian weapons remain widely favored among the local population. Sami al-Hamata, director of the BBS training center, explains that Kalashnikov rifles have gradually become a symbol of courage and resilience in the country. He points out that these firearms perform reliably even under extreme conditions, from desert heat to mountainous terrain.
Al-Hamata notes that while American rifles such as the M4 and M16 are available in Yemen, they require consistent maintenance and tend to struggle in dusty environments. For this reason, they are seen as less practical. Kalashnikov rifles, by contrast, are valued for their straightforward design and ability to withstand harsh conditions.
Weapons dealer Ashraf Munif highlights strong demand for specific models, including the AKS-74U, the SVD Dragunov sniper rifle, and the PKM machine gun. He says Russian-made weapons are known for their durability, ease of repair, and the steady availability of ammunition. Their relatively low cost also plays a significant role in their popularity.
As noted in the report, firearms have long held a distinct place in Yemeni culture. Gunfire is commonly part of celebrations, and weapons frequently appear in poetry and folklore.
According to a 2017 Small Arms Survey, Yemen ranks among the most heavily armed countries in the world, with approximately 53 small arms per 100 residents.
