Zelensky Warns of Russia Plan for Border Buffer Zone

Zelensky says Russia plans a buffer zone along Russian and Belarusian borders, warning Chernigov and Sumy regions could be under threat.

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky stated that Russia intends to create a buffer zone along the border.

According to him, this concerns not only the Russian direction but also the Belarusian one, with the Chernigov and Sumy regions potentially under threat.

Earlier in March, Zelensky himself spoke about the need to create a buffer zone on Russian territory and said he would поручить its implementation to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In turn, in late December 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the creation of a buffer zone and stated the need to expand the security zone along the border with Ukraine.
