Donald Trump says US spending on NATO will face a serious review after questioning why Washington has spent trillions to protect the alliance from Russia.
US President Donald Trump said Washington has poured trillions of dollars into NATO to shield the alliance from Russia, adding that he finds the situation somewhat absurd. He also said US spending on supporting the bloc will now face a serious review.
Trump argued that the United States had spent enormous sums to help NATO countries defend themselves from Russia, while in practice America was also defending itself, which he said made the arrangement look strange.
Earlier in April, Trump said he was seriously considering pulling the United States out of NATO after allied countries refused to support the war against Iran. He also warned that the alliance would face a very difficult future if its members did not help Washington unblock the Strait of Hormuz.
It was also reported that during a closed-door meeting on April 8 with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump sharply criticized alliance members for refusing to take part in the operation against Iran. According to Politico’s sources, the meeting was highly tense and marked by harsh exchanges.
Bloomberg, citing its own sources, reported growing frustration in European countries over Rutte’s unconditional backing of the United States in the war with Iran. According to those sources, that stance is undermining NATO unity and giving the American president inflated expectations.
