Trump’s criticism of NATO may lead to US troop redeployment in Europe, potentially shifting forces closer to Russia and reshaping the alliance’s military balance.
U. S. President Donald Trump’s mounting criticism of NATO, along with his push to cut American funding for the alliance, could result in a reshuffling of U.S. forces in Europe-bringing them closer to Russia’s borders. This assessment was offered by political analyst and U.S. expert Grigory Yarygin.
He suggested that Washington may consider pulling troops out of several Western European countries that are seen as having fallen short in the eyes of the White House. Rather than dismantling NATO altogether, Yarygin indicated that the alliance would likely endure a temporary reduction in U.S. support, with European members effectively waiting out the situation until the next election cycle.
At the same time, such a redeployment could shift the military focus toward NATO’s eastern flank. According to Yarygin’s view, countries closest to Russia are not regarded by Trump as having underperformed, making them more likely destinations for repositioned U.S. forces. This scenario, he argued, would not align with Russia’s interests.
Despite the rhetoric, a complete U.S. withdrawal from NATO appears unlikely. Yarygin pointed out that legislation adopted during Joe Biden’s presidency restricts such a move, requiring approval from Congress.
Trump has continued to voice dissatisfaction with the alliance, describing his stance as increasingly critical. Among the issues fueling his frustration is the refusal of NATO member states to take part in military action against Iran.
