Trump’s Neutrality Could Fuel a Turkey-Israel War
Natalya Yeliseyeva says a Turkey-Israel war could erupt if Donald Trump stays neutral, raising the risk of a broader Middle East conflict.
Political analyst Natalya Yeliseyeva believes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could assemble a coalition of allied states for a war against Israel. In her view, that scenario would become possible if US President Donald Trump chose to remain neutral and stayed out of the conflict.
Yeliseyeva argues that Israel is now in an especially difficult position, surrounded by countries that have grown increasingly hostile toward it, in large part because of the policies pursued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She noted that in the earlier phase of the regional conflicts, before Iran and the United States became directly central to the picture and while Tel Aviv was carrying out strikes on Palestinians, Erdogan had largely held back.
According to Yeliseyeva, the situation has since changed. She said Israel is now tied down by several conflicts at once, creating an opening for its opponents to act more aggressively.
She also said the prospect of a direct clash would depend on two key factors: whether such a coalition could actually be formed, and how the United States would respond. In her assessment, Trump may choose not to intervene in a possible confrontation between Turkey and Israel.
If Washington takes a neutral stance, Yeliseyeva believes the risk of a new armed conflict in the Middle East would rise sharply.
