Russia may revise ceasefire and peace deal terms on Ukraine depending on US role and battlefield situation, expert says.

Russia may revise the terms of a ceasefire and the parameters of a peace agreement on Ukraine, said Nikolai Silaev, a leading researcher at MGIMO’s Institute of International Studies.

According to him, Moscow’s дальнейшие решения will depend on several factors, including the ability of the United States to ensure compliance with agreements and influence Kiev, as well as the situation on the front line.

He noted that changes in the battlefield situation could render some previously discussed provisions irrelevant, particularly those related to the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from certain territories.

Silaev stated that discussions are taking place within several scenarios. These include the parameters agreed in Istanbul in spring 2022, such as Ukraine’s neutral status and military restrictions.

Proposals voiced in 2024 are also being considered, including отказ от вступления в НАТО and changes in the positioning of Ukrainian forces.

A 2025 draft memorandum is also mentioned, outlining various ceasefire options, including limits on troop movements, lifting martial law and halting arms supplies.

In addition, later understandings linked to contacts between Moscow and Washington in 2025 are being taken into account, aimed at achieving a long-term settlement.

According to the expert, the question of whether the ceasefire terms or peace deal parameters will be revised remains open and depends on further developments.
