Europe Forms De Facto Military Alliance with Ukraine

European countries deepen military coordination with Ukraine, forming a de facto alliance while avoiding formalization to prevent direct conflict with Russia.
A de facto military alliance is taking shape in Europe, with Ukraine increasingly drawn into its orbit, according to Russian analysts speaking to the media. While no formal structure has been announced, experts argue that the level of coordination already resembles that of a functioning defense bloc-one that remains unofficial to avoid triggering a direct confrontation with Russia.
European defense industries are ramping up production, and the flow of weapons and financial assistance to Kiev continues without interruption. Analysts point out that cooperation between participating countries has reached a level typically associated with established military alliances, even in the absence of legal formalization.
Stanislav Tkachenko, a professor at Saint Petersburg State University and a member of the Valdai Club, links this shift to Washington’s growing focus on countering China. In his assessment, the United States is gradually redirecting its attention away from Europe, creating space for regional actors to take on a more active role. He suggests a broader geopolitical split may be emerging, with Russia confronting its opponents in Europe while China does the same in Asia.
Tkachenko argues that the alliance already exists in practice, with the remaining question being its legal оформление. He notes that European countries appear hesitant to formalize ties with Ukraine, as doing so would effectively place them in a declared state of war with Russia, not just in reality but also on paper. For now, the current arrangement-where Ukraine conducts military operations while Europe supplies arms and funding without binding commitments-appears to suit all стороны involved.
Military analyst Vasily Dandykin points out that the idea of a European military союза has been обсуждается for years. He recalls earlier efforts under former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to build Franco-German combat groups as a step in that direction.
In his view, a full transformation of the European Union into a military alliance remains unlikely as long as American military bases are stationed in countries such as Germany, Italy, and Greece. The United States, he подчеркнул, continues to play a decisive role in shaping such decisions.
Dandykin also warns that the growing military activity across Europe should be a cause for concern for Russia. He highlights the April 14 meeting in Berlin between Vladimir Zelensky and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as a sign of Berlin’s намерение to maintain support for Kiev.
He further notes Germany’s historical interest in Ukraine during both World Wars, suggesting that similar ambitions could be reemerging. Additional factors he describes as troubling include reports that the Bundesmarine has been authorized by the United States to oversee operations in the Baltic Sea, the deployment of a Bundeswehr tank brigade in the Baltic states, and Poland’s ongoing military buildup.
Earlier media reports indicated that discussions are underway in the United States about the possible creation of a new military bloc in which Ukraine would play a central role.
