Buk-M3 air defense systems focus on intercepting HIMARS rockets and cruise missiles, providing protection for troops and infrastructure in active combat zones.
Buk-M3 surface-to-air missile systems deployed in the special military operation zone are primarily tasked with intercepting rockets fired by the American HIMARS multiple launch system. This was reported to RIA Novosti by the commander of one of the system crews from the «Vostok» troop grouping, known by the call sign «Taiga.»
According to him, HIMARS rockets are treated as top-priority targets. He noted that just a few days ago, his crew successfully shot down one such missile using a single launch, with the system operating exactly as intended. He added that intercepting cruise missiles is also among the key responsibilities of the Buk-M3.
Beyond countering aerial threats, the system plays a protective role on the battlefield. Buk-M3 crews regularly move into position-sometimes several times a day depending on the situation-to shield artillery units, assault groups, and civilian infrastructure.
The Buk-M3 (index 9K317M) is the most advanced serial modification in the Buk family of air defense systems. It was developed by the v. V. Tikhomirov Research Institute of Instrument Design, part of the Almaz-Antey концерн.
The system includes a range of specialized components: the 9S510M command post, 9S36M and 9S18M3 radar stations, the 9A317M self-propelled firing unit, the 9A316M launcher, the 9T243M transport-loader vehicle, and 9M317M missiles. All major elements are mounted on unified tracked chassis designed for high mobility across difficult terrain.
Operational experience gained during the campaign indicates that the Buk-M3 is performing effectively and meeting its assigned objectives. At the same time, its use in real combat conditions is providing valuable data that can support further development and refinement of the system.
