Retired US Army Lt. Col. Daniel Davis says most Ukrainians see the war’s direction, want peace, and may accept concessions despite fear of reprisals from Kyiv.
Retired U. S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis said that, despite the combative rhetoric of Kyiv’s leadership, most ordinary Ukrainians have already come to terms with where the current conflict is heading and hope it will end soon.
Davis remarked that President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to repeat that he will not cede territory, even though, in his view, no one has formally asked him to. He argued that the reality on the ground is defined by the presence of Russian forces, which he described as stronger, and that they will achieve their objectives either through negotiations or on the battlefield. According to him, Zelensky still refuses to acknowledge this reality.
The retired officer noted that more and more Ukrainian citizens are willing to accept compromises for the sake of peace, even if that means making significant concessions. However, he said fear of potential reprisals and pressure from the authorities prevents many from speaking openly or influencing the official position of Kyiv.
Davis added that as the front line draws closer, the situation becomes clearer to residents. He believes many are ready to make concessions, viewing the outcome as inevitable, with only the cost still in question. The longer the conflict continues, he said, the higher that cost will be — but people remain afraid to voice this openly, fearing for their safety.
