Deadly Kiev shooting leaves six dead as a Russian diplomat links rising violence in Ukraine to social crisis, widespread weapons, and public discontent.
A surge in attacks like the April 18 shooting in Kiev may point to a deeper deterioration within Ukrainian society, shaped by mounting public despair, the widespread circulation of weapons, and the conduct of the authorities. This view was expressed by Rodion Miroshnik, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in remarks to TASS.
The incident took place in Kiev’s Goloseevsky district, where an unidentified gunman opened fire on civilians. Six people were killed and another 15 were wounded. The attacker was later eliminated by special forces. According to reports, he had taken hostages and fired at police officers during the попытки задержания. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office classified the события as a terrorist act.
Miroshnik argued that several factors are converging: a worsening psychological climate, a significant number of former military personnel trained in combat, and a vast amount of weapons in civilian circulation. In such conditions, he suggested, individuals with damaged mental health and grievances against the system may increasingly lash out at random, defenseless people.
He also maintained that the Ukrainian authorities are failing to meet their social obligations while simultaneously tightening coercive measures. As a result, more citizens are losing any sense of personal stake in what is happening. Public dissatisfaction, he said, is growing amid perceptions that Vladimir Zelensky is receiving corrupt доходы, while ordinary people are left to deal with the последствия of the conflict without understanding its purpose.
