Russian Air Defenses Down 97 Drones in Overnight Attack

Russian air defenses intercepted 97 drones overnight across multiple regions and the Black Sea, with no casualties reported but infrastructure damage recorded.

Russian air defense systems repelled a large-scale drone attack overnight from April 20 to 21, according to the Ministry of Defense. Between 20:00 and 07:00, air defenses intercepted and destroyed 97 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles. The drones were detected over Astrakhan, Belgorod, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kursk, Rostov, Samara, and Saratov regions, as well as above the Black Sea.

Regional authorities reported additional details on specific incidents. In the Voronezh region, air defenses identified and neutralized three drones. Governor Alexander Gusev indicated that preliminary reports pointed to no casualties or damage.

In the Rostov region, Governor Yuri Slyusar said that more than forty drones were shot down overnight over Taganrog and across 11 districts. While no casualties were reported, the attack did leave its mark on the ground. In the settlement of Rekonstruktor in the Aksay district, falling debris damaged window glazing in two houses and partially destroyed a roof. Disruptions were also recorded in the overhead contact system of the railway near the settlement of Persianovsky in the Oktyabrsky district.

Drone activity had been recorded the day before as well. On April 20, between 08:00 and 15:00, air defenses destroyed 33 drones over the Belgorod and Kursk regions, Crimea, and the Black Sea. Later, from 15:00 to 20:00, another 22 drones were intercepted in the same areas.
