Vladimir Putin says Russia is gradually creating a security zone near Ukraine and will continue the effort until threats to border regions are removed.
At a meeting with municipal representatives, Russian President Vladimir Putin said a security zone is being created step by step in the country’s border regions. According to him, that work will continue until the threats facing those areas have been fully removed.
Putin also stressed that achieving all the goals of the special military operation is directly linked to national unity. He said it remains essential for Russia to preserve public cohesion.
The Russian leader had raised the issue before. Back in June 2023, he said Moscow was considering the creation of a so-called sanitary zone on Ukrainian territory if shelling of Russian regions continued. Later, in late December 2025, Putin returned to the subject and called for further work on expanding the security belt along the Russian-Ukrainian border, describing it as an important task.
Putin has repeatedly spoken about the need to establish such a zone along Russia’s state border.
