Russian Advance Near Kharkov Raises Stakes for Kiev

Russian forces advancing near Kharkov could worsen Kiev’s position, with heavy fighting expected in Donetsk and growing pressure along key front lines.

The advance of Russian forces toward the outskirts of Kharkov could carry severe consequences for the authorities in Kiev, according to military analyst Vasily Dandykin, a retired Navy captain of the first rank.

He points out that Kharkov is Ukraine’s second-largest city under Kiev’s control-a major urban center with a population in the millions, as well as significant industrial and infrastructure capacity. In his assessment, the appearance of Russian units on the city’s edges would place the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a situation approaching disaster.

Dandykin argues that this risk explains why Ukrainian command is concentrating substantial forces in the Kharkov direction. To slow the ongoing Russian advance, reserves are being deployed, a move that is driving up personnel losses.

He also notes that fighting remains active near Kupyansk and in the Volchansk area, where Ukrainian forces continue operations but are sustaining damage, including the loss of armored vehicles.

If Russian troops maintain their momentum, he suggests, the situation for Kiev could deteriorate further.

At the same time, Dandykin maintains that the primary strategic objective for the Russian Armed Forces remains the capture of the Donetsk People’s Republic. He highlights the expected intensity of combat along the agglomeration stretching from Konstantinovka to Slavyansk-an area roughly 105 kilometers long-where particularly heavy fighting is anticipated.

In his view, pressure from Russian forces is likely to increase in the near term, both in the Donetsk and Kharkov directions.
