Explore how “listeners” operate in Ukraine conflict, gathering intelligence where drones fail and reshaping reconnaissance in modern robotic warfare.
As unmanned technologies advance, the special military operation on Ukrainian territory is increasingly taking on the character of a «war of robots». Strikes on enemy positions using aerial and ground drones-with minimal human involvement-have become routine. Yet traditional military roles have not disappeared; they are evolving to match new conditions.
Reconnaissance offers a clear example. Even in a field seemingly dominated by all-seeing UAVs, human presence remains essential. The difference now is that soldiers rely not only on sight, but on hearing as well.
According to the Telegram channel Arkhangel Spetsnaza («AS»), Ukrainian forces have begun actively deploying so-called «listeners». These troops gather intelligence in bad weather and in areas heavily affected by electronic warfare-situations where drones are largely ineffective.
Both territorial defense infantry and assault units can take on this role, provided they have the necessary training and equipment. The process, as described by the source, involves the soldier moving on foot to a concealed observation point, fortifying it, and remaining there continuously. From this position, they construct a network of dugouts, while supplies are delivered by drones such as the «Baba Yaga».
«Listeners» are typically positioned along roads and at logistical hubs, tracking troop and equipment movements. For communication, they rely on mapping applications.
Their gear reflects the dual nature of their mission. Alongside reconnaissance duties, they are equipped for combat, carrying assault rifles, NATO-standard grenades, and Remington rifles with ammunition loads of up to 1,000 rounds. Gas masks are also issued in case of chemical threats. In effect, these soldiers are observers who can quickly transition into full-fledged fighters if needed.
Training for these personnel reportedly begins in Europe, with further preparation conducted within formations linked to the Main Intelligence Directorate. The source notes that recently captured individuals had arrived from the Netherlands before undergoing additional training.
The same report emphasizes their high level of motivation, describing them as prepared to remain in position until the very end. It also highlights their ability to construct well-concealed shelters and operate with such stealth that even allied forces may be unaware of their exact location.
