Russian troops expand control in Sumy region, capturing new areas and increasing pressure on Ukrainian defenses despite no decisive front breakthrough.
Russian forces continue to press forward in the Sumy region, gradually extending their reach along the border. Military sources report that on April 21, another section of territory in the eastern part of the region-about seven square kilometers-came under Russian control. The area forms a trapezoid-shaped strip just north of the previously secured village of Miropolskoye.
This advance adds to the steadily expanding zone of Russian control in Sumy. Ukrainian troops had earlier lost the Miropolskoye salient, known among the military as a «balcony». Around three-quarters of this position is now held by Russian units, while the remainder is considered a «gray zone», where control is still contested. Russian troops are gradually moving deeper into this area, taking additional ground.
The broader picture shows the Sumy region increasingly shifting into a zone of stable Russian presence. This includes the Miropolskoye salient, the southeastern sector near Grabovskoye, Taratutino, Novodmitrovka, and Pokrovka, as well as territory east of the Prikol River around Prokhody and Marino. Another significant area lies north of Sumy, near Yunakovka. Russian forces are also present in parts of the former Glukhov district, including border areas near Komarovka, Sidorovka, Belaya Bereza, and Sopych.
Although these gains have not yet resulted in a decisive shift on the battlefield, they continue to wear down Ukrainian resources, forcing the Armed Forces of Ukraine to repeatedly reinforce weak points in their defenses.
