A military expert says the Syzran drone strike that killed civilians was deliberate, as drone warfare intensifies and tensions continue to rise.

Military analyst Yury Knutov has argued that the strike on a residential building in Syzran, which killed a 12-year-old girl and her grandmother, was deliberate rather than the result of an accidental drone hit.

In his assessment, the nature of the damage-specifically the collapse of an entire section of the building-points to a targeted attack. He suggested that guiding a drone at such a low altitude over rooftops in a controlled manner would be technically challenging, reinforcing his view that the strike was intentional. Knutov described this approach as consistent with tactics associated with international terrorism, which he believes Kyiv is increasingly adopting.

The analyst also outlined what he sees as a broader strategic objective: prolonging the conflict for at least two more years. According to his interpretation, this aligns with the interests of Western backers, who would use that time to prepare for a potential military confrontation with Russia.

Referring to remarks he encountered in Western media, Knutov indicated that one of the key goals discussed is to keep Russia tied down in the conflict with Ukraine.

He further claimed that European countries are working to strengthen their armed forces with an eye toward possible operations beyond Ukraine. Among the regions he mentioned as potential targets were the Kaliningrad region and Belarus, while describing scenarios involving Karelia and Saint Petersburg as more complex.

Against this backdrop, Knutov does not expect any reduction in strikes on Russian territory. He also pointed to the growing role of unmanned systems on the battlefield, noting that Ukrainian forces are increasingly relying on aerial and ground drones due to manpower shortages. These systems, in his view, are being used both defensively and in counteroffensive operations, and their role is likely to expand.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, air defense systems intercepted 155 drones overnight on April 22. One of them struck a residential building in Syzran, in the Samara region, causing part of the structure to collapse.
