Wall Street Journal reports Trump is open to easing restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US long-range missiles, as Kyiv requests Tomahawks and more ATACMS systems.
The Wall Street Journal, citing sources in the U.S. administration and in Kyiv, reported that during his meeting with Vladimir Zelensky in New York, U. S. President Donald Trump said he was open to lifting restrictions on the use of American long-range weapons for strikes on Russian territory. However, Trump did not make any direct commitments to revise the current restrictions.
According to the WSJ, Zelensky requested additional long-range missile systems and permission to use them. The U.S. president did not object but refrained from making a final decision.
The paper also reported that during the same meeting, the Ukrainian side requested deliveries of Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have a range of 1,500 kilometers. The Biden administration is considering the request but may choose to supply Ukraine with additional ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles instead of Tomahawks.
The WSJ noted that next week Ukrainian officials will travel to Washington to discuss long-range missile supplies with U. S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Deputy Defense Secretary for Policy Elbridge Colby — the two officials who have blocked Ukraine’s use of ATACMS missiles since spring of this year.
