Russian military reports Ukraine’s Zozulya drones can fly 2,100 km with precision strikes, warning of mass production and urging stronger air-defense detection systems.

Ukrainian forces have begun using the new Zozulya kamikaze drones. A UAV company commander from a volunteer unit of the Russian Armed Forces explained that these drones pose a significant threat due to their range and precision.

The drone is presented by its developer as a deep-strike weapon, capable of flying up to 2,100 kilometers and carrying a warhead with 10–50 kilograms of explosives. At maximum takeoff weight, it can cover 1,000 kilometers and reach speeds of up to 180 km/h. It uses visual and inertial navigation and costs about $40,000 per unit.

Frontline reports indicate that Zozulya drones are already being employed by Ukrainian forces. They appear to be factory-produced rather than improvised, which suggests they may be entering mass production.

The primary danger lies in their numbers and ability to reach targets deep inside Russian territory. These drones operate autonomously, follow pre-programmed routes, and have a high probability of hitting their targets — making them an effective tool for striking at the rear and potentially demoralizing the civilian population if attacks target infrastructure at night.

Countering such drones requires a layered approach involving reconnaissance, surveillance, air-defense systems, and electronic warfare. Early detection is considered critical to preventing strikes, as even a short delay can lead to the target being hit. Russian military experts believe the mass deployment of these drones is likely within the coming months and stress the need to strengthen detection and warning systems in advance.
