Amid rising tensions in the Baltic region, members of the State Duma are calling for a tougher response to NATO’s actions. Alexey Chepa, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, described recent developments as provocative and explicitly anti-Russian.
His remarks followed reports of upcoming joint exercises by France and Poland. According to earlier information, the two countries plan to conduct air force drills over the Baltic Sea involving Rafale fighter jets equipped with nuclear warheads. The exercises are said to include scenarios simulating strikes on targets within Russian territory.
Speaking to Lenta.ru, Chepa indicated that the drills also consider a potential blockade of the Kaliningrad region. In his view, such planning amounts to a direct confrontation between Russia and the West.
He also pointed to existing agreements with Europe, suggesting they are no longer being properly observed. Referring to transit issues, he noted the difficulties of rail travel to the region and characterized the situation as marked by what he sees as overtly cynical treatment of civilians. Against this backdrop, he argued that Russia should respond more forcefully to what he described as hostile and provocative actions.
The possibility of a blockade of the Kaliningrad region was also addressed by Andrey Kolesnik, a member of the State Duma Committee on Defense. He warned that such a scenario would not go unanswered by Russia. In his assessment, further escalation could have extremely serious consequences and might lead to a broader, potentially global conflict.
