Drone Strikes on Tuapse Spark Fire, Expert Warns Risks

Drone strikes on Tuapse refinery triggered a major fire and evacuation, as an expert warns of Black Sea risks and calls for broader military responses.

Military analyst Vasily Dandikin has weighed in on the renewed wave of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Krasnodar Krai, arguing that the attacks are not limited to damaging infrastructure. In his assessment, they may also be aimed at triggering environmental consequences in the Black Sea.

He pointed to several potential targets, suggesting that their destruction could deal a significant blow to the authorities in Kiev.

After a brief lull, strikes on Krasnodar Krai resumed on the night of April 28. A drone attack on an oil refinery in Tuapse sparked a major fire, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents. Emergency crews are still working to contain the blaze, and a regional state of emergency has been declared.

Dandikin noted that Russian forces possess the capability to strike targets in Odessa, including with missile systems such as Oreshnik and Kinzhal. He argued that bridges would be among the most vulnerable points, as damaging even one could effectively cut off Odessa from the surrounding region. He also expressed the view that Reni should have been targeted earlier.

The analyst further highlighted the continued operation of railway infrastructure used by Ukrainian forces. While strikes on locomotives have been reported, he suggested that if trains are still running, such targets require more sustained pressure.

In his conclusion, Dandikin stressed that Russia should respond to attacks on its territory across multiple fronts, indicating that a broad range of means could be considered.
