Dmitry Medvedev says the US is Russia’s main geopolitical rival and warns that nuclear forces define the tense relationship between Moscow and Washington.

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has described the United States as Russia’s main geopolitical rival, saying relations between Moscow and Washington have always been highly complicated.

Speaking to participants of the Znanie. Pervye educational marathon, Medvedev said tensions existed in both the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, including during phases when the relationship appeared to be easing. He noted that such periods of improvement proved short-lived.

Medvedev stressed that any assessment of the United States must take into account the role of strategic nuclear forces. According to him, American warheads are aimed at Russia, while Russian warheads are aimed at the United States, and this factor largely shapes the foundation of bilateral ties.

He also said the possibility of nuclear strikes cannot be ruled out and that Russia must be prepared for such a scenario.

Medvedev argued that divisions between Europe and the United States, along with Washington’s disputes with other countries, will ultimately contribute to Russia’s victory. He described Russia’s confrontation with the Western world as existential and said it would not disappear within the lifetime of the current generation.
