Zelensky rejects Russia’s Victory Day ceasefire, warning it may serve Moscow’s interests, while the Kremlin says the truce will proceed regardless of Kiev.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has rejected the idea of a temporary ceasefire proposed by Russia ahead of Victory Day, warning that such a move could serve Moscow’s tactical interests on the battlefield. He shared this position in an interview with Bloomberg.
Zelensky argued that Kiev does not need a truce that could turn into a tactical maneuver by Russia rather than a genuine step toward de-escalation. He also suggested that Moscow might try to link the ceasefire initiative to efforts aimed at easing sanctions pressure, including a possible return to the SWIFT international payment system.
According to Zelensky, the situation remains uncertain for Ukraine, largely due to the lack of clear signals about a potential resumption of peace talks. He noted that neither the Kremlin nor the White House has indicated any readiness to restart negotiations.
He further pointed out that international attention has shifted toward rising tensions in the Middle East, which, in his view, has slowed progress on diplomatic efforts related to the Ukrainian conflict.
Meanwhile, on April 30, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the proposed Victory Day ceasefire is a sovereign decision by Moscow and will be implemented regardless of Kiev’s stance. He emphasized that the initiative comes directly from the Russian president and does not depend on Ukraine’s response, though Russia expects a constructive approach.
Peskov added that the specific timing and parameters of the ceasefire remain under discussion and will ultimately be determined by the supreme commander-in-chief.
