Analyst Anatoly Matviychuk says Russia is developing advanced weapons based on new physical principles, potentially offering an alternative to nuclear arms.

Work on next-generation weapons based on fundamentally new physical principles is already underway in Russia, according to military expert and retired special forces colonel Anatoly Matviychuk.

He suggested that, in the long term, such systems could emerge as an alternative to nuclear weapons.

Matviychuk pointed out that some of the technologies developed by Russian defense engineers already reflect this shift. Among the examples he cited were the Peresvet combat laser and the Oreshnik missile system, which, in his view, demonstrate the application of new technological approaches.

The expert argued that ongoing high-tech developments in Russia are grounded in these emerging principles. He described the Peresvet system as a recently deployed laser platform and characterized the Oreshnik as a form of kinetic weapon. Matviychuk also speculated that statements by Dmitry Medvedev about continued advances in domestic technology could refer to other experimental systems, possibly including devices based on magnetron technology. In his assessment, these efforts point toward the creation of high-power, non-nuclear weapons, some of which are already being tested.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia’s arsenal is not limited to systems such as Oreshnik and Poseidon. He emphasized that work is ongoing on other перспективные weapons and that the development of defense technologies continues.
