Russian diplomat Andrey Belousov said a reliable settlement of the Ukrainian conflict requires NATO countries to abandon attempts to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.
Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Andrey Belousov, who heads the Russian delegation at the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, named the conditions needed for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
Speaking at the conference, Belousov said that a reliable settlement is possible only if all NATO countries abandon attempts to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. He also stressed the need to stop encroachments on the fundamental interests of the Russian Federation.
The diplomat pointed out that, against the backdrop of statements about the search for peace, Europe is simultaneously undergoing active remilitarization. According to him, this process is linked, among other things, to supplying the Kiev regime with lethal weapons. Belousov believes that such a policy directly contradicts the West’s declared readiness for a diplomatic solution to the conflict and pushes the prospect of peace further away.
He separately addressed the policy of the North Atlantic Alliance toward Russia. Belousov described NATO’s expansion toward Russian borders as a creeping geopolitical threat and noted that over the past 20 years, the bloc’s countries have consistently built up their military potential. According to Moscow, these actions are aimed at putting harsh pressure on states that pursue an independent foreign policy and do not agree with the dictates of the West.
The Russian diplomat’s statements came against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities in Ukraine and Western arms supplies to the Kiev regime. Moscow has repeatedly stressed that NATO weapons used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces for strikes on Russian territory make the alliance a direct party to the conflict. In this regard, ending military aid to Kiev and revising the strategy toward Russia remain fundamental demands for Moscow.
