Politico says Trump’s team is considering military options on Cuba while pressing Havana on privatization, investment, internet access and US energy.
According to Politico, the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a force-based scenario against Cuba, although diplomacy remains the main focus for now.
The outlet reported that Washington is weighing the possible use of military methods on the island, while still trying to push the Cuban authorities toward concessions, particularly in the economic sphere.
Citing a source, Politico said the United States wants Havana to privatize state-owned enterprises, allow foreign investors into the country, expand internet access for the population and switch to purchases of American energy resources.
The publication also noted the role of Florida’s large Cuban-American community, much of which supports Trump. In recent months, its representatives have increased pressure on the White House, urging the president to follow through on his promises to change the communist regime in Cuba.
According to Politico’s source, pressure from the diaspora is a controversial factor. Cuban émigrés cannot directly alter the situation on the island, but they do add pressure on the Cuban authorities. At the same time, the source noted that the regime has endured external pressure for decades, meaning Washington needs to act more pragmatically.
Trump has repeatedly said he would turn to the Cuban issue after the operation in Iran. In early March, he also promised to secure the fall of the Cuban regime.
