The War Zone says the US is developing the NDS-A nuclear bomb to strike underground bunkers, command posts and fortified targets.
According to The War Zone, the United States is developing a new powerful nuclear air bomb designed to strike underground bunkers and fortified targets.
The outlet pointed to the US Department of Energy’s budget request for fiscal year 2027. The document mentions the Nuclear Deterrent System-Air-delivered, or NDS-A — an aircraft-delivered nuclear munition.
Weapons of this type are intended to destroy command posts, storage facilities, silo complexes and other targets shielded by layers of soil or concrete.
The War Zone cited a representative of the US National Nuclear Security Administration as saying that NDS-A would give the president additional nuclear options against hard-to-reach and deeply buried targets, preventing adversaries from placing their most valuable assets beyond the reach of American nuclear forces.
The publication noted that $99.8 million has been allocated for the development of the new nuclear weapon. According to its analysts, NDS-A could become the successor to the B61-11 bomb, which was based on the earlier B61-7 and equipped with a reinforced casing that allows it to penetrate the ground before detonation.
Details of the new bomb’s design have not yet been disclosed. It is also unclear whether it will be a free-fall munition or receive an engine for use from a greater distance.
