Russia Warns NATO Over Kaliningrad Seizure Scenario

Russia warns NATO against any attempt to seize Kaliningrad, citing non-conventional weapons and drills involving the Russian region.

State Duma Defense Committee head Andrey Kartapolov said Russia would immediately use non-conventional weapons if NATO countries attempted to seize the Kaliningrad Region.

He noted that the alliance regularly practices different scenarios during military drills, but stressed that there is a major gap between planning such operations and actually carrying them out.

According to Kartapolov, Moscow is closely monitoring NATO’s actions and is prepared to respond harshly. He said any attempt to capture the Kaliningrad Region would immediately lead to Russia’s use of non-conventional weapons, adding that the alliance has already been warned.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov said NATO was rehearsing a scenario involving the seizure of the Kaliningrad Region during exercises. He also said drills for a naval blockade of the Russian region were being conducted under British leadership.

Last year, U. S. Army Europe and Africa commander General Christopher Donahue said NATO had a scenario for capturing the Kaliningrad Region. According to him, alliance members had begun implementing the «Deterrence Line on the Eastern Flank» plan.
