Ahead of the Ankara summit, experts warn of a deep NATO crisis, questioning its future as calls grow for new security alliances in Europe.

As NATO prepares for its upcoming summit in Ankara on July 7–8, concerns about the alliance’s internal state are increasingly being framed in stark, almost apocalyptic terms. Edward Lucas, a columnist for EUobserver, suggests that the very question of NATO’s continued existence is now under serious scrutiny.

In his assessment, the stakes go far beyond the meeting itself, extending to the alliance’s long-term survival. He describes the current situation as resembling scenes from a disaster movie and argues that the summit is likely to end without meaningful results.

Lucas points to the need for a different model of cooperation, proposing more flexible alliances capable of acting decisively and taking responsibility not only for their own security but also for that of their partners. As a potential foundation for such a structure, he highlights the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), which brings together ten Northern European countries.

Discussion of mounting challenges within NATO has been growing louder in recent months, voiced not only by analysts but also by Western officials. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has acknowledged what he sees as the alliance’s ongoing weakening, while U. S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned that without American participation, NATO risks becoming ineffective.
