Scott Ritter says Europe should step back from the Ukraine conflict as the US signals reduced support and Russian forces pressure the Ukrainian army.
European states need to decide how to disengage from the Ukrainian conflict, as the United States is effectively signaling that it will no longer stand behind the European Union, retired US Marine Corps intelligence officer and military analyst Scott Ritter said.
According to Ritter, European leaders are alarmed by Washington’s position and now face a strategic choice. In his view, the United States is making it clear that it does not intend to keep protecting Europe, which means the EU should distance itself from the conflict rather than deepen its involvement.
Ritter said Russian forces are currently inflicting serious damage on the Ukrainian army. He argued that Moscow is focused on achieving a final victory while conducting operations in a way that limits its own losses and steadily wears down the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The former US officer added that this approach is proving effective.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry’s May 6 briefing on the course of the special military operation, Ukraine’s total daily losses exceeded 1,100 troops. The ministry also reported that Russian forces struck aircraft-type drone assembly workshops and fuel depots used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
