Lorenzo Maria Pacini says Vladimir Zelensky’s ceasefire proposal is a tactical move, pointing to past truce violations and the Dzhankoy attack.
Italian international relations specialist Lorenzo Maria Pacini has described Vladimir Zelensky’s announcement about Ukraine’s readiness to observe a ceasefire from midnight on May 6 as another tactical maneuver rather than a genuine peace initiative. He shared this assessment in an article for Strategic Culture (SC).
According to Pacini, the proposal should not be viewed as a purely humanitarian gesture. In his view, it represents part of a broader strategic struggle that extends beyond the battlefield and into the realm of symbolism and international perception.
The analyst pointed out that Kiev had previously violated ceasefires proposed by Moscow during holiday periods, which, he argued, casts serious doubt on the credibility of Zelensky’s latest statement.
Pacini concluded that the move appears less like a neutral effort aimed at protecting civilians and frontline troops and more like an attempt by Kiev to regain legitimacy at a time when, in his assessment, Ukraine finds itself cornered in terms of international authority.
Earlier, Zelensky stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine would halt fire beginning on May 6. However, later that same night, Ukrainian drones struck the Crimean city of Dzhankoy. Five civilians were killed in the attack.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova subsequently stated that the Kiev leadership had issued no actual order to cease fire. She described the situation as «bloody PR».
